# Aurilis Magic Academy

> Attend a magic school where you complete 13 classes across three years plus Extra Credit, earn Familiars, craft Potions, and graduate.

## Overview

**Aurilis Magic Academy** is a secondary world map where you attend a magic school and complete a full curriculum across Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3, plus a standalone Extra Credit tier, earning Exam Points, crafting Potions, bonding with Familiars, and graduating with class scrolls that unlock advanced courses.

<iframe width="100%" height="400" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UKWU3eRr6FU" title="4thewords: Aurilis Magic Academy" frameBorder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowFullScreen />

The Academy is one of the most content-dense areas in 4thewords, with hundreds of thousands of words of quests across thirteen classes, four Familiars, and six craftable Potions. Unlike the main story, you can work through it at your own pace alongside your regular writing.

> **Where to find it:** Left sidebar → **Adventure** → **Universe** → use the map dropdown to select **Aurilis Magic Academy** [Open in 4TW ↗](https://app.4thewords.com/adventure/universe)

## How to Unlock the Academy

Complete the quest **"Portal to Magic"** in the **Luciola Forest** quest market. Luciola Forest is the very first area in Our Valley. You can unlock the Academy relatively early in the game.

## What's Inside

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/4thewords/WcUTixVGh-iTChyO/images/aurilis-map-labeled.jpg?fit=max&auto=format&n=WcUTixVGh-iTChyO&q=85&s=21e9f6978c65b82448b3dfa48700b37a" alt="Aurilis Magic Academy map with all courses labeled: Assembly Hall, classes by location, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, and the Moon area" width="1920" height="1080" data-path="images/aurilis-map-labeled.jpg" />
</Frame>

The Academy has five areas:

| Area                 | What's here                                                           |
| -------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Assembly Hall** | Headmaster Amidala, main quests, Familiar Market, Potion Market |
| **Enchanted Forest** | Alchemy (Year 1), Fungi Studies (Year 2), Lock & Key (Year 3)         |
| **Academy Library** | Ancient Knowledge (Year 1), Thread Magic (Year 2), Ink Magic (Year 3) |
| **Observatory**      | Astrology (Year 1), Mirror Magic (Year 2), Illusions (Year 3)         |
| **Spells Dungeon** | Spells (Year 1), Void Magic (Year 2), Bone Magic (Year 3) |
| **Moon** | Moon Studies (Extra Credit), Moon Exam Point Shop |

Each area hosts one class per year, so you'll revisit areas as you advance through the curriculum. Moon is the exception: it's a standalone Extra Credit area outside the Year 1-3 rotation.

## The Curriculum

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/4thewords/WcUTixVGh-iTChyO/images/aurilis-curriculum.jpg?fit=max&auto=format&n=WcUTixVGh-iTChyO&q=85&s=abe5a20e7a1ee32d2419e711800bdd3c" alt="Academy curriculum progression: Year 1 (~100k words), Year 2 (~150k words) alongside Moon Class (Extra Credit, ~200k words), Year 3, Year 4 (~300k words), Alumnus (500k+ words)" width="4327" height="5673" data-path="images/aurilis-curriculum.jpg" />
</Frame>

### How Classes Work

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/4thewords/zl6D9L_TNOO8PfvK/images/aurilis-class-structure.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=zl6D9L_TNOO8PfvK&q=85&s=2fd18e19a151911872a64f4d20f0333d" alt="How classes work: Base Class quest chain unlocks full course load, every quest awards Exam Points, Class Store and Crystal Store" width="1831" height="1859" data-path="images/aurilis-class-structure.png" />
</Frame>

Every class in the Academy follows the same structure:

1. **Three introductory quests** unlock the full course for that class.
2. **Complete course quests** to earn **Exam Points** for that class.
3. **Spend Exam Points** at the class's own market for extra items and rewards.
4. **Complete the "Final Exam" quest** to earn your **graduation scroll** for that class.

Graduation scrolls from Year 1 unlock Year 2 courses. Year 2 scrolls unlock Year 3 courses.

### Exam Points

Each class has its own Exam Point currency. Points accumulate as you complete quests in that class and are spent at that class's **Class Store**. They aren't interchangeable between classes. Exam Points are also required to purchase Familiars associated with that class.

Every class also has a **Crystal Store** where you can spend [Crystals](/character-and-gear/resources-and-currency) on exclusive Academy cosmetics and house items.

<Note>
  Exam Points don't expire. There's no rush to spend them. Accumulate across quests and buy when you're ready.
</Note>

## Year 1 Classes

<Tip>
  Start with **Ancient Knowledge**. It's the shortest class and introduces Academy systems before you commit to longer courses. Its graduation scroll also unlocks Thread Magic (and combined with Spells, Void Magic).
</Tip>

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/4thewords/RFwil_oqcye01Cqc/images/aurilis-year1-classes.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=RFwil_oqcye01Cqc&q=85&s=9907eaeaab7d2f7d857a37f731ac1e46" alt="Year 1 class cards: Ancient Knowledge (Easy, ~23k words), Alchemy (Average, ~36k words), Astrology (Average, ~26k words), Spells (Hard, ~26k words)" width="1600" height="847" data-path="images/aurilis-year1-classes.png" />
</Frame>

### Ancient Knowledge (\~23,000 words)

**Location:** Academy Library | **Professor:** Bartholemus (endurance monster)

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/4thewords/RFwil_oqcye01Cqc/images/aurilis-ancient-knowledge.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=RFwil_oqcye01Cqc&q=85&s=40c2e7fd4f953dcb620ce4a017848fdb" alt="Ancient Knowledge class breakdown: base class quests, 4 subjects, extra credit, Final Exam requirements and rewards" width="1920" height="1307" data-path="images/aurilis-ancient-knowledge.png" />
</Frame>

The introductory class and the shortest in Year 1. Covers the language of magic. Has 6 class monsters and 18 quests. The final stage features Professor Bartholemus as an [endurance battle](/writing/writing-battles/endurance-battles).

*Recommended first class if you're new to the Academy.*

### Alchemy (\~36,000 words)

**Location:** Enchanted Forest

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/4thewords/RFwil_oqcye01Cqc/images/aurilis-alchemy.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=RFwil_oqcye01Cqc&q=85&s=06a733fe9746d1f69f9b4f855cb2440f" alt="Alchemy class breakdown: base class quests, 4 subjects, extra credit, Final Exam, and Cobaltean Familiar unlock" width="1920" height="1307" data-path="images/aurilis-alchemy.png" />
</Frame>

A mid-length class with 6 monsters and 19 quests. Some quests require items that drop from monsters in **other Year 1 classes**. So you may need to run Alchemy alongside Ancient Knowledge or Astrology rather than sequentially. Completing Alchemy unlocks battles against the **Cobaltean Familiar**.

### Astrology (\~26,000 words)

**Location:** Observatory

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/4thewords/RFwil_oqcye01Cqc/images/aurilis-astrology.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=RFwil_oqcye01Cqc&q=85&s=2f6cacfbd1fd138925ebf3264dd939c0" alt="Astrology class breakdown: base class quests, 4 subjects, extra credit, Final Exam, and Galaxy Familiar unlock" width="1920" height="1320" data-path="images/aurilis-astrology.png" />
</Frame>

A shorter class with 6 monsters and 22 quests. Completing Astrology unlocks battles against the **Galaxy Familiar**. This class also has 6 hidden quests that become available when you wear certain Wardrobe items or own certain House items.

### Spells (\~35,000 words)

**Location:** Spells Dungeon

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/4thewords/RFwil_oqcye01Cqc/images/aurilis-spells.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=RFwil_oqcye01Cqc&q=85&s=32e0d7d93219daea04b14aa383cdf66e" alt="Spells class breakdown: base class, Blue Dungeons, Red Dungeon (must complete in one go), extra credit, Final Exam" width="1920" height="1307" data-path="images/aurilis-spells.png" />
</Frame>

The hardest Year 1 class. Contains 6 monsters, 26 quests, [timed quests](/character-and-gear/questbook#timed-quests), and a special challenge: the **Red Dungeons** section must be completed in a **single continuous pass** from beginning to end. If you leave or fail partway through, you restart the Red Dungeons from scratch.

<Warning>
  Approach the Red Dungeons when you have uninterrupted writing time. Leaving mid-run resets your progress to the start of the Red Dungeons section.
</Warning>

## Year 2 Classes

Year 2 classes are significantly longer than Year 1 and require completing the corresponding Year 1 graduation scroll before you can begin. Each Year 2 class is located in the same area as its Year 1 partner. The area gets an additional Quest Market for the Year 2 course.

| Class             | Location         | Professor               | Approx. Words | Prerequisite                       |
| ----------------- | ---------------- | ----------------------- | ------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| **Thread Magic**  | Academy Library  | Guest Lecturer Kultalva | \~65,000+     | Ancient Knowledge scroll           |
| **Mirror Magic**  | Observatory      | Prof. Aylin             | \~73,000+     | Astrology scroll                   |
| **Void Magic**    | Spells Dungeon   | Prof. Wynncott          | \~62,000      | Ancient Knowledge + Spells scrolls |
| **Fungi Studies** | Enchanted Forest | Prof. Perrenne          | \~80,000      | Alchemy scroll                     |

<Note>
  Year 2 is a long commitment. The four classes collectively require hundreds of thousands of words. Treat them as long-term goals you chip away at alongside your regular writing.
</Note>

Every Year 2 class has its own **Class Store** (items cost Exam Points + Coins) and a **Crystal Store** (exclusive cosmetics and house items purchasable with Crystals).

<Note>
  Void Magic requires **two** Year 1 scrolls, so complete both Ancient Knowledge and Spells before starting it. It also features a **Void Wignow** endurance battle with a challenging 6-minute timer.

Studies how ingredients combine to create magical inks, which markings and bindings augment a caster's powers, and how to choose the right ink for the right moment. Professor Apopia is a recognized name in the Ink Magic community and shares his ongoing research with each year's class.

Ink monsters are item-hungry. Stock your inventory before starting class.

Animated bone monsters break down into inanimate remains after a short time. That short lifespan forces fast writing, and the battles demand high [Defense](/character-and-gear/items-and-spells/battle-items-and-stats) stats plus consumable [Potions](#potions). Bone Magic is a smaller class than the other Year 3 courses.

<Warning>
  Bone monsters have a very short lifespan. Equip high Defense gear and bring consumable Potions before entering the Dungeon.

Students learn to clear their minds, focus attention, and perceive illusions in the space between realms. Every quest in this class is [timed](/character-and-gear/questbook#timed-quests): drop any quest you can't complete in one focused session and return to it later.

<Warning>
  All Illusions quests have time limits. Drop a quest if you don't have focused writing time for it. It will be waiting when you return.

## Extra Credit Classes

Extra Credit classes sit outside the Year 1-3 progression. No graduation scrolls required, just complete the class's own intro quest to get started.

The Academy has **four Familiars** you can unlock. Magical creatures that become [companions](/character-and-gear/items-and-spells/battle-items-and-stats) and Wardrobe/hideout pets.

Familiars are purchased from the **Familiar Market** in the Assembly Hall. Each requires a combination of **Exam Points** from its associated class plus other crafting materials.

You can also encounter each Familiar as a battle monster in the Academy. Fight them to earn [mastery](/game-systems/mastery-system) and drops, or purchase them from the market when you have the requirements.

## Potions

The Academy's **Potion Market** (Assembly Hall) sells six types of Potions. Powerful battle tools available nowhere else in the game.

| Potion             | Effect                                                                                      | How to get                   |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------- |
| **Freeze** | Pauses your current battle, stopping the countdown | 1 Stempo + coins (purchased) |
| **Slow Hex** | Adds +15 minutes to your current battle timer | Crafted |
| **Fire Grenade** | Deals 10% of the monster's total HP as instant damage | Crafted |
| **Fire Blast** | Deals 1,000 damage to your entire [Battle List](/writing/writing-battles/battle-list) queue | Crafted |
| **Inflate Potion** | Adds time equal to 10% of the current battle's total minutes | Crafted |

<Warning>
  Potions cannot be used in [**Endurance Battles**](/writing/writing-battles/endurance-battles) or [**Co-Op Battles**](/writing/writing-battles/co-op-battles). They work only in solo battles.
</Warning>

The **Freeze Potion** is the most immediately accessible, purchasable for 1 [Stempo](/character-and-gear/resources-and-currency) plus coins, no crafting required. If you're in danger of a timer expiring, a Freeze Potion gives you breathing room.
