4thewords is an online writing game. Your words defeat monsters, which drop rewards you use to equip your hero, visit markets, craft recipes, complete quests, and advance through a world infected by a mysterious purple dust. You can write anything. A novel, a blog post, homework, a journal entry, a particularly long email. Your word count is what matters in battle, not the topic. There are no prompts to follow and no typing tests. Just write what you want to write, and the game turns your output into progress.

How it works

Write → Battle → Earn. That’s the loop. You open a document and write. Your words deal damage to a monster you’ve chosen to fight. Defeat it before time runs out and you win coins, items, and loot. Use that loot to unlock new areas, equip your hero, and take on harder monsters. Every day you write 444+ words, your writing streak grows, earning you Wings, Medals, and other rewards. Beyond battles, you can organize your writing into projects, set word count goals, and publish your work for the community to read and comment on.

Made for all writers

From beginners to 10,000-words-a-day professionals. English, Spanish, French, or Dwarvish. Novel writing, journaling, fan fiction, blogging, and homework. If you’re writing, this is for you. Three kinds of battles: solo (write enough words to defeat a monster before time runs out), endurance (survive a monster’s attacks by keeping your defense high), and co-op (team up with other Dust Warriors to take down a shared monster).

What 4thewords is not

  • Not a typing game. Speed doesn’t matter. Write at your own pace.
  • Not a prompt generator. You chose what to write about. Novel, fan fiction, school work.
  • Not AI-generated. All art in the game was hand-painted. The stories were written by humans. Your words are yours, we take no ownership of anything you write.
  • Not a subscription trap. The core game is free. No credit card needed to start. Paid plans unlock more features, but you can write, battle, and streak on the Free plan indefinitely.
