Quick definitions for game-specific terms used throughout the help center. If you encounter a word you don’t recognize while reading, find it here.
TermDefinition
AreaA region on the world map with its own monsters, quests, and markets. Unlocked by completing quests and advancing in the Main Storyline.
AttackA battle stat on equipment. Higher Attack reduces the number of words you need to defeat a monster.
BattleA writing challenge: you fight a monster by writing words within a time limit. When your word count meets the monster’s health total, you win.
Battle QueueThe list of monsters you currently have active battles running against.
CoinsStandard in-game currency earned through gameplay: battles, quests, and activities. Used to buy items in Markets.
CompendiumYour personal encyclopedia of discovered items and monsters, found in the Journal.
CrystalsPremium currency. Used to purchase certain items in Markets. A small number are distributed monthly to Pro/Lifetime subscribers; others can be purchased.
DefenseA battle stat on equipment. Higher Defense adds extra time to your battles (more time to write) and more health in endurance battles.
DustThe poisonous purple force infecting the world of 4thewords. As a Dust Warrior, you fight to push it back.
Dust WarriorWhat players are called. A member of the resistance fighting the Dust.
Dragon LairA desert Expedition Area where you raise dragon eggs into adult battle companions through 6 growth stages.
Endurance BattleA special battle type where you lose by not writing continuously. Defense stat determines your health pool instead of time.
Exam PointsCurrency earned by completing quests at Aurilis Magic Academy classes. Used to unlock Class Market rewards and craft Familiars.
EXPExperience points earned by defeating monsters. Accumulate enough EXP and your hero levels up. See Items & Inventory.
FamiliarA creature companion earned through the Aurilis Magic Academy. Boosts your battle stats passively.
HideoutYour personal space in 4thewords: decoratable with items earned through gameplay, quests, and mastery rewards. Sometimes called “Maps.”
Hero LevelYour hero’s progression level, increased by earning EXP from defeating monsters. No level cap. Each level grants unique rewards.
Hunt for the AncientsA 200+ quest side journey through the Valley, led by Velts. Unlocked at Elder Library through Mama Tree.
Hunter TokenCurrency earned through the Hunt for the Ancients: spent at the Elder Library Hunter Store on 250+ exclusive Wardrobe and House rewards.
LuckA battle stat on equipment. Higher Luck improves item drop rates and the rarity of drops when defeating monsters.
Main StorylineThe guided quest path that unlocks new areas and advances the game’s story. Your primary way to progress.
MasteryA per-monster progression system. Defeat a creature repeatedly to raise your mastery level (1–10), earning badges and exclusive rewards.
Mastery BadgeA badge earned at each mastery tier for a specific monster. Displayed in your badge collection.
MonsterA creature you fight by writing words. Every monster has a word count (health) and a countdown timer. Defeating monsters earns Coins, items, and mastery.
PotionA consumable battle item crafted at Aurilis Magic Academy. Provides one-time effects in normal battles (freeze, extra time, damage).
ProjectA writing container that holds related files. Free plan allows 1 project; paid plans unlock more.
QuestA challenge from an NPC in an area. Completing quests earns items, currency, and, most importantly, new area unlocks.
QuestbookYour list of active quests. Free plan allows 4 slots; paid plans unlock more.
ReactionsCollectible sticker or emotes used in Forum threads and sent to friends in private chat. Purchased or earned from Markets.
Shrine of AgesA special Expedition Area that lets you revisit past limited events using Shrine Tickets.
StempoA special item used to repair missed streak days or reserve future ones at the Streak Maintenance Station. Pro/Lifetime subscribers receive 10 monthly.
StreakA count of consecutive days you’ve written 444+ words. Streaks break if you miss a day and you haven’t used a Stempo to protect it.
Streak WingsWardrobe rewards earned for maintaining a long consecutive writing streak. New wing styles unlock from 2 days up to 10+ years.
WorldmapThe navigable map of 4thewords, showing all areas. The main maps are Our Valley, Winter’s Island, Expedition Areas, and Aurilis Magic Academy.
